Discover Vallehermoso

Vallehermoso is the largest municipality in La Gomera. With 109 kilometers, it covers both the north and south sides of the island. Its wide area offers visitors a huge variety of natural and human landscapes sprinkled with numerous neighborhoods of interest such as Tamargada, Alojera, Chipude, El Cercado, or La Dama. In addition, Vallehermoso borders all the municipalities of the island and has the largest extension of the Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alongside these dense laurel and fayal-brezal forests, the palm groves of the Alojera and Arguamul basin or the deep ravines of the south between La Dama and Argaga stand out. In addition, there are endless possibilities offered by its network of trails, covering several hundred kilometers and offering the possibility to enjoy large differences in elevation, technical routes or beach and mountain paths in a short space of time. This richness of landscapes makes Vallehermoso an ideal municipality for the enjoyment of sports and tourism, with a wide and varied range of attractions and services.

There is a tourist information point that provides service in several languages and offers visitors brochures, maps, and other materials available about the municipality, its attractions, and its extensive network of trails: Vallehermoso City Hall. Route of the Poets

Our route starts at the roundabout at the entrance to Vallehermoso, presided over by the bust of Pedro García Cabrera sculpted by the artist Fernando Garcíarramos. From this point, we ascend along Calle Mayor to continue towards the Palmar neighborhood, where the poet's birth home is located. A key figure in literary avant-gardes, it was in this traditional Canarian home where Pedro García Cabrera grew up and where he played in his childhood, memories that remain unchanged in many of his poems and where the town of Vallehermoso, and the surroundings of this neighborhood, are an essential part of them.

Retracing our steps, we return to Calle Mayor, where we will continue our route to stop at the house of the Pulido family, where Bohemia, the poetess of Vallehermoso, lived all her life. A figure that has regained interest in recent decades, in the 1920s she was an important regional literary personality, publishing her compositions in some of the archipelago's most widely read newspapers, her voice falling silent in the 1940s when she left literature for other professions.

Next to the house is the church of San Juan Bautista, a neo-Gothic temple designed by the architect Antonio Pintor and completed by Mariano Estanga, whose origins, prior to the fire it suffered and which led to its new construction, date back to the 16th century. Inside, some important pieces stand out, such as the titular or the one known as Christ of Triana.

If we descend by the church towards the Plaza de la Constitución again, we will find on the left hand the CEO Vallehermoso, an educational center that until recently bore the name of the poet Pedro García Cabrera and whose bust is still part of the schoolyard.

Our route ends by following the road that leads to the beach. 500 meters from the school premises is the access to the La Vegueta neighborhood, where the Casa de la Cultura Pedro García Cabrera is located. It is an old banana packaging facility converted into a multi-purpose space that includes a library, exhibition hall, and auditorium, and is the cultural heart of the municipality.
